Joint Measurement Board Measuring

The Joint Measurement Board (JMB) provides a national scheme for the measurement of the height of horses and ponies for the purpose of description and classification of such horses and ponies for competition.

We have been on the panel of official measurers of the JMB for over 25 years. We can provide both full and annual height certificates for horses and ponies for competition purposes.
We have a quiet, secluded, purpose built bespoke measuring pad which allows horses and ponies coming to the clinic for official measurement to become relaxed and settled before measurement.

An appointment can be made for measurement on most weekdays by prior arrangement – please call us on 01487 773333 to make an appointment for measurement.
The horse or pony’s passport and any previous JMB certificate must be available at the time of measurement, so please ensure that they accompany the horse on the day as the measurement cannot go ahead without them.

All horse or ponies that are measured need to have a microchip. If your horse or pony does not have an existing microchip, then we can microchip them immediately after the measurement, for which an additional fee applies. The JMB cannot issue a certificate until this has occurred.

Key Features of the Scheme
Measurements must be carried out by official measurers on registered measuring pads with shoes removed.
Animals cannot be measured until they are four years of age. Annual certificates are issued to animals aged four, five and six years old, or to any animal over seven which is being measured for the first time.

All horses and ponies must have at least one annual certificate before they can have a full certificate.
Animals aged four, five and six years can only have annual certificates that expire on the 31st December of the year of issue.

Animals aged seven years or more can have a gold certificate, without first having an annual certificate, which is immune to objection and re-measurement except by order of the JMB stewards. For information about the gold certificate please contact the JMB directly – see below for details.
Measurements can be done at any time of the year but annual certificates will expire on the 31st December following the date of the last measurement.

All animals must have a readable microchip before a measurement certificate is issued
Consecutive measurements must be done by a different measurer from that who did the measurement the year before.
Full certificates will be issued to horses and ponies seven years and over, provided that they have held an annual certificate.

The official measurer for a full certificate must be from a different practice from that to which the official measurer who performed the last annual measurement belonged.
The fee for a measurement and issue of an annual or full certificate is currently £100.00, reviewed annually (please check the JMB website for more details, which has to be paid at the time of measurement by cheque made payable to the JMB.

Our veterinary and staff will advise you on payment options whilst you are with us at Fellowes Farm.
A remeasurement procedure can be used to settle doubts about accuracy.
